IUMA: The Monsoons
The Monsoons (originally called Uncle Frank's Nose job) have been playing together as a band since 1998. Originally meeting at Boston's Berklee College of Music, Mike, Wes, Eric, Russ and Omar have composed and performed some of the most original and intensely humorous music ever heard in Boston. The band's music is literally indescribable, for it borrows its influnces from literally everything. The common thread, perhaps, is the band's sardonic social commentary and characteristic wry humor tha...

Crystallization Age of NWA 1460 Shergottite: Paradox Revisited - Nyquist, L. E.
We have determined the Rb-Sr age of basaltic shergottite NWA 1460 to be 312 /- 3 Ma, and the Sm-Nd age to be 352 /- 30 Ma. The initial Sr and Nd isotopic compositions of NWA 1460 suggest it is an earlier melting product of a Martian mantle source region similar to those of the Iherzolitic shergottites and basaltic shergottite EETA79001, lithology B. The new ages of NWA 1460 and other recently analyzed Martian meteorites leads us to reexamine the paradox that most of the Martian meteorites appear...

Aero-Structural Interaction, Analysis, and Shape Sensitivity - Newman, James C., II
A multidisciplinary sensitivity analysis technique that has been shown to be independent of step-size selection is examined further. The accuracy of this step-size independent technique, which uses complex variables for determining sensitivity derivatives, has been previously established. The primary focus of this work is to validate the aero-structural analysis procedure currently being used. This validation consists of comparing computed and experimental data obtained for an Aeroelastic Resear...

Unsteady Flow in a Supersonic Turbine with Variable Specific Heats - Dorney, Daniel J.
Modern high-work turbines can be compact, transonic, supersonic, counter-rotating, or use a dense drive gas. The vast majority of modern rocket turbine designs fall into these Categories. These turbines usually have large temperature variations across a given stage, and are characterized by large amounts of flow unsteadiness. The flow unsteadiness can have a major impact on the turbine performance and durability...

Aerodynamic analysis are performed using the Lockheed-Martin Tactical Aircraft Systems (LMTAS) Splitflow computational fluid dynamics code to investigate the computational prediction capabilities for vortex-dominated flow fields of two different tailless aircraft models at large angles of attack and sideslip. These computations are performed with the goal of providing useful stability and control data to designers of high performance aircraft...

G65.25.7: A Thermal Composite Supernova Remnant with a Cool Shell - Shelton, R. L.
This paper presents archival ROSAT PSPC observations of the G65.25.7 supernova remnant (also known as G65.35.7). Little material obscures this remnant and so it was well observed, even at the softest end of ROSATs bandpass (approx. 0.11 to 0.28 keV). These soft X-ray images reveal the remnant s centrally-filled morphology which, in combination with existing radio frequency observations, places G65.25.7 in the thermal composite (mixed morphology) class of supernova remnants...

Rotation of EOFs by the Independent Component Analysis: Towards A Solution of the Mixing Problem in the Decomposition of Geophysical Time Series - Aires, Filipe
The Independent Component Analysis is a recently developed technique for component extraction. This new method requires the statistical independence of the extracted components, a stronger constraint that uses higher-order statistics, instead of the classical decorrelation, a weaker constraint that uses only second-order statistics. This technique has been used recently for the analysis of geophysical time series with the goal of investigating the causes of variability in observed data (i.e...

Some Studies of Flux Ropes in the Earth's Magnetotail: ISTP Guest Investigator Program - Khurana, Krisha
The objective of the proposal was to understand the formation and evolution of flux ropes in the Earth's magnetotail. For this purpose we proposed to carry out the modeling of the flux ropes observed by the Geotail spacecraft in the middle magnetotail. The modeling of the flux ropes has yielded vital parameters like the scale sizes and the total flux contents of the flux ropes. The modeled parameters were then compared with the solar wind parameters and the magnetotail parameters (local lobe fie...

Noise and Bandwidth Measurements of Diffusion-Cooled Nb Hot-Electron Bolometer Mixers at Frequencies Above the Superconductive Energy Gap - Wyss, R. A.
Diffusion-cooled Nb hot-electron bolometer (HEB) mixers have the potential to simultaneously achieve high intermediate frequency (IF) bandwidths and low mixer noise temperatures for operation at THz frequencies (above the superconductive gap energy). We have measured the IF signal bandwidth at 630 GHz of Nb devices with lengths L = 0.3, 0.2, and 0.1 micrometer in a quasioptical mixer configuration employing twin-slot antennas...

On the Critical Behaviour, Crossover Point and Complexity of the Exact Cover Problem - Morris, Robin D.
Research into quantum algorithms for NP-complete problems has rekindled interest in the detailed study a broad class of combinatorial problems. A recent paper applied the quantum adiabatic evolution algorithm to the Exact Cover problem for 3-sets (EC3), and provided an empirical evidence that the algorithm was polynomial. In this paper we provide a detailed study of the characteristics of the exact cover problem...

In 1991, the program evolved into the Fatigue Countermeasures Program, emphasizing the development and evaluation of strategies to maintain alertness and performance in operationa...

Statistics Analysis of the Uncertainties in Cloud Optical Depth Retrievals Caused by Three-Dimensional Radiative Effects - Varnai, Tamas
This paper presents a simple approach to estimate the uncertainties that arise in satellite retrievals of cloud optical depth when the retrievals use one-dimensional radiative transfer theory for heterogeneous clouds that have variations in all three dimensions. For the first time, preliminary error bounds are set to estimate the uncertainty of cloud optical depth retrievals. These estimates can help us better understand the nature of uncertainties that three-dimensional effects can introduce in...
